There is a lot of information to starting a business, catering is no different. Take you time and before you know it you will be on your way to a profitable exciting catering career.
Creating Your Business Part 1 - What do you want?
Starting you own catering business can be as varied as caterers are different themselves. To follow a specific strict procedure can be frustrating and difficult. Filling out questionnaires in software programs for business plans has always caused this frustration to me. Asking me questions that I have no idea of the answer and certainly do not want to spend the time and money to find answers to. Certainly when the questions are not appropriate for my situation. . . . keep reading
Creating Your Business Part 2 - Choice of size and type of Business
The goal of this section is to give you an idea of the many different ways you can cater. By no means is this complete, use this information to start your own imagination flowing. In part one you decided what you want to do with your business. Now in part two you will decide what type of catering you will use to accomplish your goals. Please remember just because you focus on corporate catering does not mean you can not do a wedding. Most caterers do a little of everything. . . . keep reading
Creating Your Business Part 3 - Keep it Legal?

The last thing you want to do is spend several hundred if not thousand dollars on setting up a catering business in your home or commercial location only to find out your city will not allow it.

Certainly many small caterers do not have health permits or business licenses.  Although I do not recommend this, what you do is your own business.  If you do choose this route please think it through. . . . keep reading

Creating Your Business Part 4 - Research Competition & Choose Menu
Chef Jeff
We have finally made it to the beginning of the fun part. Typically you will not find this section until later in a course or book on starting a catering business or restaurant. To me this is backwards and very wrong. In part five of the series we will get into picking out the equipment you need for your new business. Yet how can you pick out your equipment if you have no idea of what you are going to cook? Certainly some equipment you will need no matter what you cook. . . . keep reading
Creating Your Business Part 5 - Equipment Small & Large
Chef Jeff
Part one on deciding what you want is crucial to this section on selection and purchasing equipment. The last thing you want to do is purchase an expensive piece of equipment that is going to sit around unused. Start this process with a pencil and sheet of paper and your imagination. Picture in your mind being in the kitchen you will be using. . . . keep reading
Creating Your Business Part 6 - Start-Up Costs
Chef Jeff
This section will vary widely depending on what type of catering business you have decided to start. If you have chosen to start out of your home kitchen with a few small caterings almost all these figures will not be relevant to you. If leasing a commercial space with dining facilitates is your desire than you will have many more costs to consider. My goal here is to give you a list of items you can plug into your situation. . . . keep reading
Creating Your Business Part 7 - Forms
Chef Jeff
The following forms are the backbone of your catering business. Due to the simplicity of the business there are not a lot of forms you have to learn to use. I have created a video for each form to explain there uses and give example on how to change them to your needs. Start by watching the master video explaining how to down load the forms and how to make adjustments to the forms in Microsoft word and excel. . . . keep reading
Creating Your Business Part 8 - Marketing
Chef Jeff

Let the games begin. Once again we come back to part one and what is it you want out of your catering business. With the answer in mind we can turn to marketing your catering business.

How large your business grows depends on how many people know about it. If no one knows your exist, no one can order from you. That is not to say just by letting people know you do exist they will order from you. Most people are very busy and living in their own world, unless they are presently looking for a caterer telling them about your business will likely go in one ear and out the other.

Creating Your Business Part 9 - Purchasing Product
Chef Jeff

Writing a section on purchasing the product may seem strange to some.  You would think it is a simple as walking into a store getting what you need and buying it.  Yes it is that simple and no it is not.

When you consider somewhere between 25% and 50% of your new revenue stream will be food purchases, care must be taken in buying food.  How big and how many caterings you do will determine where you buy your food.
